So, a long , long time ago, the land of our current heroes was plagued by war (as usual). This land had a tree, a divine tree that was worshipped by all. And this tree bore a fruit once in ages, once in a millennium to be precise. However everyone was forbidden from eating it.
And then came along a princess from another land and consumed that fruit (sounds like EVE, doesn't it?). Now that fruit had an enormous amount of chakra in it. Upon eating that,
the princess, Kaguya Otsusuki, obtained enormous power and she used this power to end all wars. She came to be known as the ' Rabbit Goddess'.
However, absolute power corrupts absolutely!!!
Soon she started using her great powers to dominate all. She is also said to have used a very powerful genjutsu ( called the 'Infinite Tsukoyomi', yes) to maintain this peace. Very soon she became infamous as a demon.
Kaguya had two sons - Hagoromo Otsususki and Hamura Otsususki who inherited Kaguya's powerful chakra. Both brothers realized their mother's evil ways and fought a great war with her. Kaguya together with the divine tree became the Ten tails and laid the land to waste. The brothers finally managed to subdue the Ten Tails with Hagoromo becoming its jinchuuriki, the first ever jinchuuriki. For this act he came to be revered as a God, and came to be known as the Sage of Six Paths.
Hagoromo was insanely powerful. He could use the Six paths , Truth seeking balls and what not. However, unlike his mother he genuinely desired peace in the world. And to pursue this he distributed his chakra among all, preaching the concept of 'Ninshu' to ensure peace. He also distributed the chakra of the ten tails into the nine beasts that we know today.
He was aware that the journey to peace is not a matter of one lifetime and therefore he groomed his sons Indra and Ashura to carry on his legacy. Indra the elder, inherited his fathers awesome powers and tended to work alone. Ashura the younger one, was a dud. He realized that in order o rival his brother he needs the cooperation of others along with a lot of hard work. In this process, he finally managed to realize his true potential and become as powerful as his brother. Hagoromo appreciated Ashura's way and chose him as his successor. But this angered Indra and he took up arms against Ashura.
And this fight has continued over lifetimes with both reincarnating again and again. The previous incarnations were Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju. The current incarnations are......come on take a guess!
And now, why is he called the Sage of Six Paths, That is because he was the original owner or possessor of the Rinnegan. And therefore he had mastery over the Six Paths ( We see pain using the six paths also as he possesses the Rinnegan):
1. Deva Path: Attract or Repel Objects.
2. Asura Path: Use of weapons and armour
3. Human Path: Read minds and remove souls.
4. Animal Path: Use of Summoning Jutsu to call upon numerous animals.
5.Preta Path: Absorb Chakra
6.Naraka Path: Summon and Control the King of Hell!!!
And beyond all this is the Outer Path that gave him control over life and Death.
The Sage of Six Paths was the Ultimate Badass!!!
